Forgive us King, for we have sinned. The environments of the minimal-techno music scene, no-dress code nights and the likes of Kokon To Zai, Julius and Rick Owens acts as inspirations for the contemporary unisex brand that is Physical Novel. Yet it seems the brand, like it’s assortment of inspirations, has a keenly tuned sense of the attraction of innocence and the Gothic.
With the King of the Youth, Ian Connor, taking the helm, a sense of sin and the exotic echoed throughout the collection. His stylised use of the cigarette – with accompanying smoke – and gritty edges of London’s streets added a conspicuously dark and mysterious threshold to the loose, oversized silhouette of Physical Novel’s Jersey/Leather Reaper Jacket. Yet there is also innocence, saintliness even, in the collection. In the form of ‘Silver 3M Anorak’, made from the highest quality of ripstop nylon, even the King himself appeared as a saint against the backcloth of London’s oldest streets.
