As a fellow member of his generation, I am proud to present to you,
Sean Alequin, a name you’re gonna be seeing a lot of.
You lot should probably start getting used to this face as he’s gonna be around for a while. At just 16 years of age, Sean (who is still at school) is the youngest networker in New York. Sean’s passion for creating the next greatest collection of cut and sewn pieces has caught the attention of a few names to say the least. These names include New York’s underground king of creativity Wil Fry, the music industry’s top stylist, Ugo Mozie, and one of Milan’s finest designers, Marcelo Burlon.
All names aside, Sean’s real game is putting his blood, sweat (and hard earned lunch money) into putting true fashion back on the map with his creation – Noir et Blanc. Noir et Blanc boasts original, innovative hand-cut and sewn garments made fresh in New York with an incredible attention to detail.
Hey Sean, tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born in Bronx, New York, and I grew up there for most of my life. I was always influenced by street wear and I’d like to have always considered myself well-dressed, up to date with the latest trends, etc. Fashion was always a part of my daily life, so I guess it was only a matter of time until I’d decide to make a career out of it.
How do people react when they find out you’re only 16 years old?
Haha, people are usually pretty astonished when they hear my age, but I can use it to my advantage and I have done since day one. I don’t mean to sound rude or disrespectful, but how can you not respect and have faith in the younger generation in this business? We are always sharper and more informed than the elders. I never really knew I’d be in the position I’m in today, but for the time being, just sit down, grab some popcorn and watch because I have something great coming.
What’s the primary focus of Noir et Blanc at this stage?
I believe that even in the high fashion industry, you always have to incorporate a hint of streetwear. Streetwear has been the father figure to what we know today as run-way fashion. Being original and spontaneous is something I really stand for, so you can definitely expect surprise releases and “pop-drops”. The main focus right now in terms of theactual clothes? I’m going to be focussing on very simple men’s silhouettes. I want to build a distinct silhouette and proportion to the point where my brand is recognisable and stands out from other designers. I want to create garments that can be worn every day, and look better with every wear.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Honestly I’d rather not get ahead of myself but I definitely see a bright future. In the years to come I see myself accomplishing many personal goals as well as career. I’m a firm believer in the fact that if you want something, you will receive it as long as you’re prepared to put in the hours, work hard, keep focussed and stay determined.
Are there any figures you’d want to be at a similar caliber with in 5 years time?
I’d like to see myself in the same shoes as people like Rob Garcia, Ashton Michael etc. Those guys are the Elite to me.
Is there anyone else you see around your age or level that has a promising future ahead of them?
I think that nowadays people hinder creativity by over-flooding the industry with mediocre designs, there are too many people trying to do the same thing now and fashion as an industry is becoming over-saturated. One person I can honestly say has a promising future is my brother Ev Bravado or “Lease on Life”. Ever since I met Ev his level of aspiration strongly impacted me.
What is your end-goal?
My idea and dream is to give the people what they have always wanted but never been satisfied with. What I gain in profits means absolutely nothing to me. Seeing people enjoy and appreciate my work changes the whole definition of my career. It makes my dream a reality.
Noir et Blanc will be releasing a headwear capsule collection in the EjderForLife shop, Monday the 10th of June at 10pm UK time.
